Position Overview
A private equity firm is evaluating an investment in a GSHP business operating in the US and Canada, specializing in the design and installation of geothermal systems for residential and commercial customers. We are seeking an experienced service provider to conduct technical due diligence, in-depth technical and operational assessments. This role involves reviewing system designs, engineering practices, and proprietary technology claims against industry standards, performing physical inspections of installed assets, and evaluating performance data, scalability, and compliance. The consultant must have proven experience in technical diligence for private equity transactions and deep expertise in the GSHP market. Immediate availability is required to support an accelerated timeline with a target close date of September 30, 2025. Selected providers will sign an NDA and review project materials prior to an introductory call.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive reviews of GSHP system designs, engineering practices, and proprietary technology claims, benchmarking against industry standards in residential, commercial, and new construction applications.
Perform physical inspections of installed geothermal assets to assess workmanship, materials, conformance to specifications, and identify any systemic defects or risks.
Evaluate system performance data, maintenance practices, and service history to determine reliability and long-term viability.
Assess the company's capacity for scalability, including workforce capabilities, equipment adequacy, and supply chain robustness.
Review regulatory and environmental compliance across US and Canadian operations, ensuring adherence to relevant standards.
Identify upcoming capital expenditures, long-term technical risks, and opportunities for operational improvements.
Prepare detailed reports and recommendations tailored for private equity investment decisions, highlighting key findings and mitigation strategies.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to gather insights and validate assessments.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
7+ years of experience in the GSHP market, including residential, commercial, and new construction sectors in the US and Canada.
Proven track record performing technical and operational diligence for private equity firms or similar investment entities.
Deep functional expertise in geothermal system design, installation, performance analysis, and regulatory compliance.
Strong knowledge of industry standards, such as those from IGSHPA, ASHRAE, and relevant building codes in the US and Canada.
Experience with physical inspections, defect identification, and risk assessment in geothermal installations.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to produce high-quality reports.
Immediate availability for engagement, with flexibility for travel to inspection sites.
Willingness to sign an NDA and review confidential materials promptly.
Preferred Qualifications
Certifications in geothermal design or installation (e.g., Certified GeoExchange Designer).
Experience with GSHP scalability assessments and supply chain evaluations in North American markets.
Familiarity with environmental regulations and sustainability practices in the renewable energy sector.
